Oakland Raiders: 3 free agents to target this offseason

1. C.J. Mosley

If the Raiders don’t target someone like Devin White out of LSU, they need to sign C.J. Mosley away from Baltimore. As Jon Gruden alluded to recently in an interview, the Raiders haven’t had a consistent middle linebacker since Greg Biekert. And that was back to the 2001 season.

Kirk Morrison would likely question that statement, as he was solid for Oakland in the late 2000’s. But the Raiders have been abysmal at the linebacker position for the better part of the last two decades. That seems rather hard to do considering there is a draft and free agency every year. I guess that is why I am not a front office member of any NFL teams/

Mosley has been the every-down linebacker for Baltimore for the last five seasons, earning Pro Bowl honors in three of them. He is adept at stopping the run but is also more than capable of covering tight ends. If you have watched the Raiders at all over the last few seasons, you know that one of their biggest struggles is covering tight ends. Mosely would help shore that issue up.

Along with some combination of Nicholas Morrow, Jason Cabinda, and Marquel Lee, the Raiders could have something to build upon with their linebackers. Mosley, who will be 27 by the time next season kicks off, will be able to play every snap while also imparting his wisdom on the younger guys. Something that Derrick Johnson was unable to do this season.

If the Raiders can convince Mosley to not go back to Baltimore, or any other city for that matter, they would be landing a player that will bring a sense of swagger or an edge back to the Raiders defense.

Because they will have to overpay, Oakland should ensure they land him by giving him an offer he cannot decline. Mosley would propel the rebuild and would help turn the Raiders into a contender sooner than anticipated.
