No. 3 wide receiver is still vacant
We have completed preseason play and there is still no clear-cut favorite for the No. 3 wide receiver spot. Prior to their week three matchup, Jon Gruden talked to the public about his displeasure regarding a No. 3 receiver. He challenged all the receivers to step up and take the opportunity in the game against the Green Bay Packers. However, that’s a position that should’ve already been won by Martavis Bryant.
The Raiders did trade away a third-round pick for him, which is insanely overpriced for him. He’s not a versatile wideout and is currently struggling to fit in Gruden’s offense. Clearly, Gruden is not getting the player he initially thought he was receiving. Ryan Switzer, who was also brought on via trade, had garnered heavy praise throughout the offseason. Now he’s on his way out of Oakland via trade once again. He just didn’t show enough for Gruden to keep him on.
As for the rest of the receivers, there isn’t really much to say about them. The expectations for them is just as depth players and rightfully so since none of them are making noise. It’s very disappointing that the Raiders are taking the whole preseason to figure out who’s their next best option is after Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson. I understand the competitive environment that Gruden has created and I am all for it because their young players have answered the call. It’s just baffling to me that Martavis Bryant or anyone else hasn’t driven themselves ahead of the pack.
