Oakland Raiders: 5 Biggest Disappointments of 2018 Preseason

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The inept backup quarterbacks

Most teams in the NFL would struggle to win a game without their starting quarterback. In the Raiders case, they would struggle to score if they’re backups had to lead the team. Connor Cook and EJ Manuel looked atrocious this preseason. Manuel can’t protect the ball and Cook can’t deliver it. Cook did look pretty strong in the first game against the Detroit Lions.

It felt like Cook had finally started to turn the corner and develop with Gruden overseeing him. However, Cook got everyone’s hopes up and completely came down to earth afterward. There really isn’t too much to expect from a backup quarterback. It’s just the fact that no one is superseding the other. They’re both matching each other’s poor performances, which is a cause for concern.

Gruden himself doesn’t even believe these two are Derek Carr’s backup. When asked if the backup quarterback is currently on the roster Gruden responded with “I don’t know.” The Raiders scouts have a lot of work in front them after those comments. Their eyes are going to be on the quarterbacks that get cut when teams trim down to their 53-man roster.
