1. Heisman Trophy
The Heisman Trophy is never won in the preseason. There are always players who burst onto the scene and steal the spotlight. No one expected Joe Burrow to throw 60 touchdowns in 2019 and run away with the Heisman. But, there are always preseason favorites.
Heading into the 2020 season, Fields, along with Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, is considered a front runner. Fields is the only returning finalist. Burrow took home the trophy in 2019 over Fields, Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurt, and Ohio State defensive end Chase Young. In 2019, Lawrence and Fields had very even seasons.
Lawrence threw for more yards and finished with more rushing yards. Fields edged out Lawrence in passing and rushing touchdowns. Fields also won the interception battle by throwing three compared to eight from Lawrence.
Lawrence is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. This does not mean that he will runaway with the Heisman. Fields is a duel-threat quarterback that does not turn the ball over. He knows how to make good decisions on the field. Ohio State runs a system that is built for the quarterback to succeed. When it is all said and done, Fields could be hoisting the Heisman in 2020.
