San Francisco 49ers: Solomon Thomas
San Francisco fleeced the Chicago Bears at the top of the 2017 NFL Draft. The 49ers held the No. 2 overall pick before Chicago traded up one spot to draft Mitchell Trubisky. The trade was a head scratcher considering the 49ers were not going to select Trubisky. Good move, Bears.
Thomas’ time in San Fran has been underwhelming to say the least. He started just three games in 2019 and has six sacks since entering the league. The 49ers have one of the best defenses in football and trading Thomas would not change the narrative.
The 49ers already declined Thomas’ fifth-year option. He carries a $9 million cap hit for 2020. The 49ers will have to sign George Kittle to a massive extension sometime in the near future. Trading Thomas is a way to free up cap space to sign their superstar tight end.
When you have the chance to lock up a player like Kittle, you do it. This is just one reason why trading Thomas away is a good idea. It could be done near the end of summer closer to the regular season.
