There weren’t many positive takeaways from the New York Giants’ 2023 season. After winning a playoff game during the 2022 campaign, New York won four fewer games this past season, producing very little on both sides of the ball.
The Giants were near the bottom of the league in virtually every stat as the team struggled to move the ball or score consistently. On defense, they struggled to keep opponents off the scoreboard or from moving the ball effectively.
However, if there was one thing that the Giants did well on defense, it was force turnovers. They were ninth in the NFL with a turnover percentage of 14.1. New York was first in turnovers forced, as their opponents turned the ball over 31 total times.
Unfortunately, the Giants’ offense was so poor, that they rarely took advantage of the plays the defense or special teams would make. In fact, their ineptitude led to the team accomplishing something that hasn’t been done in the last 20 seasons.
NFL News & Rumors: Brian Daboll & New York Giants Updates
As shared by Dov Kleiman on X, the Giants finished the 2023 season with a +12 turnover ratio. That led the NFL, but it didn’t result in as much success on the field as it should have. According to Kleiman, New York became the first team in 20 years to finish with a turnover ratio of +12 or better and have a losing record.
Not being able to take advantage of those opportunities created by forcing turnovers was one of the many reasons the Giants struggled in 2023. They just couldn’t get on track with three different quarterbacks starting games and their offensive line struggling.
If they want to get on track in 2024, their offense has to be more opportunistic, giving the team a chance when the defense is keeping them in games. If that doesn’t happen, there could be some major changes on the horizon next offseason.
