Oregon Ducks: Exclusive interview with 2021 4-star QB commit Ty Thompson

Ty Thompson, Ducks, NCAA Football

Ty Thompson may not be a household name, but for those familiar with the NCAA Football recruiting scene, he will be known. Currently viewed as a four-star quarterback prospect in the 2021 recruiting class by 247 Sports, Thompson is committed to the Oregon Ducks.

Standing in at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, Thompson is labeled as a pocket passer. He put together an impressive junior season in 2019, completing 59 percent of his pass attempts for 4,074 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions, according to his MaxPreps page.

Those numbers show the dynamic arm that Thompson possesses. Oregon has always seemed to have a high-powered offense and Thompson could be the next star quarterback for them.

For those who haven’t heard much about Thompson or seen what he brings to the field, we have you covered. Our own Evan Massey was able to sit down for an exclusive interview with the Ducks’ commit.

First up, we talked about why Thompson decided to commit to Oregon and what the main deciding factors were for his decision.

“Really the culture and the coaching staff is what were the main deciding factors. They obviously play very high level football year in and year out, but the great coaching staff and family culture is what made me choose Oregon.”

Thompson then proceeded to open up about what he brings to the field for fans who may not have seen him play.

“I’d say I’m a dynamic player that can make throws from the pocket and on the run and also extend plays with my legs.”

We then talked about Oregon’s 2021 recruiting class and Thompson was happy to share some other players to watch and his thoughts on the class in general.

“Our class right now is special and it’s only getting started. Some of the best OL commits in the country. One if the best TEs and one of the best WRs. Not to mention our solid defense. It’s going to be scary here in the next few months for sure. I’d say to watch out for Kyron and Moliki because they’re just crazy playmakers.”

Fans always love seeing comparisons to current NFL or college quarterbacks for commits. Thompson has a very intriguing name that he thinks his game compares to.

“I’d say my game somewhat compares to Jared Goff. We are similar in size and he also can make plays with his legs along with his arm. We can both make any throw on the field.”

As for Thompson, he is focused on improving during his senior year before starting his career at Oregon. He opened up about his primary focus for the upcoming year.

“Pocket presence, accuracy, and mental preparation.”

Next up, we discussed when Thompson knew he had legitimate D1 potential and who has helped him along his path the most.

“I’ve always known and dreamt of playing college football since I first started playing. There had never been a doubt in my mind that I’d be where I am today. It became real my freshman year when I started talking to schools and getting interest. I’d say my parents have helped me the most getting to this point. The way they raised me and the constant support is what made me who I am.”

Thompson was also willing to share some advice for young players who have dreams of playing college ball.

“I’d tell them to be the hardest workers in the country. Never let a day go by where you feel like you didn’t get better. Always be the first person there and the last to leave. This goes for the classroom as well.”

While it may be a bit early, we still wanted to hear some goals that Thompson has set for himself for his career with the Ducks.

“My first goal is to win the starting job. Then I want to lead the team to a PAC 12 championship and then a National Championship. I want to be remembered with all the greats that have come through Oregon.”

Finally, Thompson wrapped up the interview by sending out a message to the fans. He could not be more excited to get to work!

“Shoutout to the Oregon fans. I’ll see y’all in January. Go Ducks!”
