The Week 3 matchup between the Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers was a highly anticipated one. It could be the last time that Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady face off against each other and that dominated a lot of headlines.
The game didn’t live up to expectations as a shootout as both offenses were stifled by dominant defensive performances. Rodgers is still trying to work out the kinks in an offense with plenty of new faces. Brady was down wide receivers Mike Evans because of suspension along with Chris Godwin and Julio Jones because of injuries.
There weren’t a lot of familiar faces on either offense at the skill positions and it showed. But, there was one standout that rose above everyone else on the Packers and that was rookie Romeo Doubs.
Doubs was the second wide receiver taken by the Packers in the 2022 NFL Draft as he was selected in the fourth round out of Nevada. Christian Watson out of North Dakota State was selected in the second round after Green Bay traded up.
But, in the early going, it has been Doubs making a name for himself and earning reps with the first-team offense. He is earning the trust of Rodgers and in Week 3 had what could be his breakout performance.
Doubs caught all eight of his targets for 73 yards and a touchdown, the first of his career. In the process, he accomplished something that no Packers receiver outside of Davante Adams has since Week 1 of 2018. He is the first player other than Adams since Randall Cobb to catch at least eight passes in a game.
Aaron Rodgers looks to be as surprised as anyone, but that goes to show just how long Rodgers has been waiting for the team to add some help offensively. Hopefully, it isn’t that long again until another player catches eight passes for Green Bay.
The team certainly hopes that another player will emerge along with Doubs in the coming weeks as the passing game will continue to be a work in progress. With Sammy Watkins now on IR, there are opportunities to take advantage of and Doubs was the first one to do so.
