Green Bay Packers: 3 Burning Questions Heading Into the Preseason

Packers Wire – USA Today

Offensive Line Depth

It is no secret that Aaron Rodgers is the life-blood of this team. When he is on the field, there is hope. It’s that simple. When Rodgers is on the field, there is always a chance to win. Therefore, protecting him needs to be of the utmost importance.

Sometimes his improvisational style of play can make him awfully difficult to protect. However, when he is in the pocket, and when he is the most vulnerable, the offensive line will need to prevent any big hits on a 34-year-old who has broken his collarbone on two separate occasions.

The starting group is pretty good. When fully healthy, this is probably a top ten unit in the NFL. Health has been a major concern and the wrong injury to the wrong player could easily derail the season. And injuries are also a part of the game of football. They are going to happen, it’s inevitable. The key to handling injuries is the quality of depth behind them.

This is where my concern resides. I am not fully confident in this unit’s ability to handle an injury to a significant player. All-Pro left tackle David Bahktiari gave fans everywhere a heart attack during the team’s infamous family night practice when he rolled his ankle and was carted off of the field. It has since been reported that the injury should not be considered serious, but it causes you to take a serious look at the supposed lack of depth in this offensive line unit.

This group is one I am going to watch very closely moving forward. Chances are one of these backup guys is going to be playing significant snaps at some point this season.
