Packers coach Matt LaFleur opens up about Rashan Gary

The Green Bay Packers are in full training camp mode as they prepare for the quickly approaching 2020 NFL season. While some believe the Packers are primed for a step back from last season, the team themselves is expecting to compete for a Super Bowl once again. One player who must improve to help those chances is second-year pass-rusher Rashan Gary.

Gary has come into training camp looking much better this season. Take a look at a photo that was released yesterday showing a much leaner version of him.

Matt LaFleur is excited about his young defensive playmaker. After a rough rookie season stuck behind Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith, Gary is hoping to earn more playing time and prove that the Packers didn’t make a mistake when they take him at No. 12 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Speaking of LaFleur, the head coach took some time to share some brief thoughts about Gary. The thoughts he shared were definitely good things to hear for the Packers and Gary.

“One thing you can never question is how Rashan goes after it, his work ethic.”

Head coach Matt LaFleur, speaking earlier in the day, echoed reporters’ comments by saying that Gary returned to camp in “phenomenal shape.”

During his rookie season last year, Gary ended up recording 21 total tackles to go along with two sacks and a fumble recovery. Not bad for the role that Gary was given. The Packers have to figure out a way to get him on the field.

Standing in at 6-foot-5 and around 270 pounds, Gary could very well earn some time on the defensive line next to Kenny Clark. He doesn’t have to play on the edge. Gary would provide more pass-rushing from the middle of the line.

Either way, the future is looking bright for Rashan Gary with the Packers. He obviously worked very hard this offseason and is ready for whatever role Mike Pettine gives him.
