Packers Eyeing Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer In 2023 NFL Draft?

The Green Bay Packers’ 2022 season is on life support after they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football in Week 12, dropping their record to 4-8 on the season. To make matters worse, Aaron Rodgers suffered another injury in the game, putting his playing status in doubt.

Rodgers was already battling a thumb injury that he suffered in Week 5 playing against the New York Giants overseas. He admitted this past week that the thumb was in fact broken and he is now dealing with an injury to his ribs that was suffered against the Eagles.

The injury was bad enough that Rodgers was removed from the game as Jordan Love played the entire fourth quarter. He looked good in his limited appearance, leading the team on two scoring drives.

There are a lot of questions about who will be under center for the Packers not only for the remainder of this season, given Rodgers’ health, but in the future as well. Regardless of who is under center, the front office needs to add more weapons to this offense.

The 2023 NFL Draft could present the Packers with a great opportunity to add an impact pass catcher. Right now, they are currently slated to pick eighth, which would put them in a prime position to add a playmaker to the offense. One NFL scout that spoke to NFL Analysis Network believes Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer would be the perfect selection for Green Bay.

“I know one guy they’ve had their eyes on is Notre Dame tight end, Michael Mayer. They’re intrigued with how he would fit into their offense. Personally, I think it would be a perfect pick if he’s there.”

Mayer has been an impactful player for the Fighting Irish since the day he stepped on campus. He has emerged as one of the best tight ends in the nation and if he declares for the NFL Draft, he will be selected high.

In 12 games this season, Mayer has caught 67 passes for 809 yards and nine touchdowns. All three stats are leading the team by a wide margin as the next closest to him is 30 receptions, 340 yards and three touchdowns. Given the struggles of Notre Dame’s offense as a whole, Mayer’s production this season is that much more impressive.
