Packers’ Matt LaFleur Issues Brutal Assessment Of Offense

Seemingly everything that could have gone wrong for the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 season has. They had very little margin for error coming into the season given the roster’s inexperience and lack of depth in some areas. Unfortunately, those errors have been plentiful and injuries haven’t helped the cause.

Green Bay is entering their Week 9 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams at 2-5. They could catch a break this week depending on how Matthew Stafford’s thumb is doing, but this is a team that hasn’t proven they can take advantage of such situations yet.

The Packers coaching staff isn’t getting the most out of their plays on either side of the ball currently. They rank 21st in points scored and 25th in yardage gained, while they are 20th and 21st in each category defensively.

That is right in line with their overall PFF grade of 71.2, which ranks 21st in the league. They are 25th in offense with a 64.8 and 13th in defense with a 73.0 overall. The defense has certainly done enough for the team to have at least one or two more wins, but the offense needs to be playing better.

The Packers haven’t scored more than 20 points in a game since Week 2. Quarterback Jordan Love has been overwhelmed when facing pressure, as teams are blitzing them relentlessly knowing he will make mistakes. But, he isn’t solely responsible for the mistakes being made.

Head coach Matt LaFleur did not mince his words when giving an assessment of the team’s offense on Monday. “It seems like somebody makes a mistake every play on offense,” LaFleur said.

That certainly isn’t an encouraging development. At the end of the day, that sounds like it is on the coaching staff as much as the players for not having them as prepared as they should be to take the field.

But, mistakes are expected when you have as much youth as the Packers do on offense. They have a first-time starter at quarterback and the only pass catcher with more than one season of NFL experience was tight end Josiah Deguara, who was listed as an H-Back/Fullback on the original depth chart.

This coaching staff has not looked equipped to handle that kind of inexperience, unable to put the young players in positions to succeed. That could lead to some major changes this offseason, especially if the Packers offense plays at the same level for the next 10 weeks as they have thus far.
