The Green Bay Packers have been very quiet in free agency this offseason, but could they look to make an intriguing splash late? So far, they have mainly focused on retaining their own talent in Aaron Jones and Kevin King. But, if they are looking for a potential impact addition at this point in the offseason, linebacker Kwon Alexander could be an interesting fit.
ClutchPoints recently named the Packers as a potential landing spot for Alexander. It makes a lot of sense for both sides.
“Should Brian Gutekunst and the front office be interested in scouring the free agent market for a veteran linebacker, three is one name that they should consider signing. That name would be Kwon Alexander.”
Alexander at one point was expected to become a star in the NFL. He has struggled with some injury woes and has also played inconsistently at times. While those are concerns for any team that chooses to sign him, he is still a very intriguing target for a team with linebacker needs.
Last season with the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints, Alexander put together a decent all-around year. He ended the year with 57 tackles, a sack, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and four defended passes. Those numbers show why a team like the Packers, who absolutely need help at inside linebacker, should take a long look at signing Alexander in free agency.
Green Bay has had defensive issues over the last few years, but their offense has been among the league’s elite. If they want to get past the NFC Championship Game, which they have lost in each of the last two years, they need to get their defense to an elite level. Alexander would not come in and power them to that level, but he could help.
Brian Gutekunst has had a rough offseason. The drama with Aaron Rodgers has made his name come to the forefront in Green Bay and many believe that he should be fired. However, if he wants to make a move to help silence the noise, a one-year deal with Kwon Alexander could be a good option.
It will be interesting to see what the rest of the offseason has in store for the Packers. Alexander may not end up in Green Bay, but the fit is definitely intriguing to think about.
