For years one of the biggest needs for the Green Bay Packers has been at wide receiver. It was a need once again this offseason and for the 20th straight draft, they opted not to take a pass catcher in the first round.

But, on Day 2, Brian Gutenkust got to work adding weapons around his new starting quarterback, Jordan Love. One of the playmakers that he came away with was Michigan State wide receiver, Jayden Reed.

The Packers made a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, acquiring the No. 50 overall pick, which they used on the former Spartan. He will be joining a very young group of wide receivers in Green Bay and could have a chance to get into the lineup right from the start.

Reed has gotten his first taste of the NFL during the team’s rookie minicamp and OTAs. He recently revealed what his early thoughts are on Tuesday following practice via the team’s YouTube channel.

“A lot of slot and a little bit of outside,” said Reed following Tuesday’s practice. “It’s kind of similar to college, but I’m primarily in the slot now, so it’s different. I like working in space, and I’ll fit in the NFL playing in the slot but also rotating outside.”

Versatility was one of the things that made Reed such an intriguing prospect coming out of Michigan State. In the early going, Matt LaFleur and his staff are taking full advantage of it. Having the experience of playing on the boundary but also possessing a skill set that enables him to play from the slot should lead to success at the next level.

Working in space is something he is used to. While he may not have played out of the slot as much in college, he does have experience as a return man. He had 42 kickoff returns and 38 punt returns collegiately, excelling in both.

Reed could work into the offensive line right away, but at least the team knows he can contribute in other ways in case he needs more time to develop as a wide receiver. The Packers have got a good one with Reed, who will be able to contribute from Day 1 in some capacity.
