Packers: Sammy Watkins mentioned as a potential trade target for Green Bay

With the 2020 NFL season right around the corner, the league is still trying to figure out exactly how to play it with the COVID-19 pandemic picking up steam once again. The Green Bay Packers still have holes in their roster and are always open to making moves to improve. Kansas City Chiefs wideout Sammy Watkins has been mentioned as a potential trade target.

After failing to address the wide receiver position much this offseason, making a move to acquire Watkins would make a ton of sense. Green Bay did have interest in signing Watkins when he was a free agent just a couple years ago.

Why could the Packers revisit the idea of acquiring Watkins from the Chiefs? Quite simply, Kansas City just spent huge money to lock up Patrick Mahomes long-term and Watkins is in the final year of his contract.

Last season with the Chiefs, Watkins ended up catching 52 passes for 673 yards and three touchdowns. It seems very unlikely that Kansas City will look to re-sign Watkins next offseason. Moving him for some kind of value would make a lot of sense.

Watkins to the Packers would be exactly what the doctor ordered for Green Bay. They currently have Davante Adams as their No. 1 wideout, but have no clue who will step up as their No. 2. Acquiring Watkins would give them their No. 2 option.

Freddie Boston of Lombardi Ave recently mentioned Watkins as a potential trade target for the Packers. His logic makes a ton of sense, although there is no guarantee that Kansas City or Green Bay would be interested in the move.

While Watkins has missed time due to injury in his career, when healthy he’s a difference-maker. And as the number two receiver in the Packers offense next to Davante Adams, he’d have an opportunity to dominate in Green Bay.

If the Packers are truly interested in bringing in an impact player for Aaron Rodgers, Watkins would be a legitimate fit. He would likely cost a third or fourth-round pick, which is worth it for a team looking to make a leap into the Super Bowl.

Green Bay finished the 2019 season with a 13-3 record and a trip to the NFC Championship Game. They are not far off from winning another title. Rodgers isn’t getting any younger and the Packers need to do everything possible to give him the best chance to win another ring.

All of that being said, Sammy Watkins would be an intriguing trade target if the Packers are interested. They may not be able to work something out with the Chiefs, but it would be worth looking into.
