Packers Showing Interest In Another Intriguing QB Prospect

There has been a ton of focus on the quarterback position for the Green Bay Packers this offseason. The end of an era is getting near as the team is in trade negotiations to send Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. Rodgers intends to play for New York this season, ending his tenure in Green Bay.

Taking over for Rodgers will be Jordan Love. Love was a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft as the Packers traded up to select him. That is part of what led to the relationship between Rodgers and the Packers souring in recent years.

This will be Love’s first chance to really showcase his skills as the preseason and a few relief appearances are all he has on his resume. He had one start in his career in 2021, stepping in for Rodgers, who was sidelined because of the league’s health and safety protocols.

While Love is set to take over as the starter, the team’s depth chart behind him is lacking. There currently isn’t another quarterback under contract other than Rodgers, who is on his way out of town. The Packers will assuredly add a veteran to the mix at some point as insurance behind Love, but they could also look toward the draft to add some depth.

One potential target for the Packers is Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford. Clifford is set to meet with the Packers on a top-30 visit on Tuesday, which insinuates that he is someone the franchise has a good amount of interest in.

Clifford had a successful career with the Nittany Lions, which started with a redshirt in 2017 and as the backup to Trace McSorley in 2018. After that, the job was his as he fended off multiple people, including 2023 NFL Draftmate, Will Levis.

In his career, Clifford completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 10,661 yards, 86 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. He is the school’s all-time leader in passing yards, but what teams in the NFL may find most impressive was that he was a four-time captain. Only one other player in Penn State history had achieved that status.

Clifford is considered a late-round fringe prospect, so the Packers could be doing their due diligence to make him a potential priority undrafted free agent. If Clifford is selected, it will likely come late on Day 3. Green Bay has four seventh-round draft picks, so the opportunity will certainly be there if they like Clifford enough to use a pick on him.
