Packers Sign Intriguing Sleeper UDFA Edge Rusher

Brenton Cox, Packers

The Green Bay Packers did a very good job of addressing needs on the roster during the 2023 NFL Draft. They picked up some extra draft capital from the New York Jets in the Aaron Rodgers blockbuster and put it to good use immediately.

New starting quarterback Jordan Love should be very happy with how things turned out as the team made a concerted effort to bring in playmakers offensively. Two tight ends, three wide receivers and one running back were selected with another tight end and wide receiver signed as undrafted free agents.

However, there is one undrafted free agent that the Packers signed that is drawing a lot of attention; edge rusher Brenton Cox Jr. out of Florida. His collegiate career ended on a low note after being dismissed from the team after he and head coach Bill Napier agreed to part ways.

He focused on the NFL Draft for the next few months and partook in the NFL Combine. He ran a 4.82 40-yard dash with a 33-inch vertical leap, 9-foot-7-inch broad jump and 24 reps on the bench press. While not the most eye-popping numbers, certainly solid nonetheless.

Despite receiving a third-round grade, Cox was not selected at all during the draft. That means the Packers could have quite a steal on their hands if he is able to make the most of the tools that he possesses.

Cox has the prototypical size you are looking for from an edge defender. He has legitimate play strength, which also helps him in run defense setting the edge. Some patience will be needed when it comes to developing his tools, but he can become a very effective three-down player down the line.

He is a worthwhile undrafted free agent for the Packers to take a shot on. A highly decorated player that began his collegiate career at Georgia as a five-star recruit, there is a lot to work with. If Matt LaFleur and his staff can coach Cox up, they will have a very useful player on their hands.
