Green Bay Packers: Studs and Duds from the First Preseason Game

Packers Wire – USA Today

Stud: CB Josh Jackson

I have been an advocate for pumping the brakes on Jackson since Green Bay selected him in the second round back in April. However, from what I saw on Thursday, I was impressed by the quick development of the young corner.

Jackson is learning an entirely new style of coverage: NFL level press man coverage. At Iowa, Jackson excelled at playing off-ball (zone) coverage. But, on Thursday, he was able to stick with receivers, staying in their hip pockets. He played significant snaps and even operated as the number one corner at times. Even in opportunities where he was matched one-on-one outside with no safety help, Jackson held his own.

This is not to say he does not still have work to do because he does. However, he has exceeded my expectations to this point of where I expected his development to be. I have heard that Jackson is constantly trying to learn and there were actually examples of it in the game on Thursday. After each play, he would look up at the Jumbo-Tron and watch the play. He would do this regardless of the outcome of the previous play. A young player with that much desire to learn is very exciting.
