Why The Packers Should Be Excited About Rashan Gary
Standing in at 6-foot-5 and just under 280 pounds, Gary is a very intimidating physical presence. He has great athleticism, strength, and speed, which allows him to bully past offensive linemen. Or at least it should help him do that.
Last season, the Packers did not have much of a role for their first-round pick. He struggled to find consistent playing time. That needs to change this season.
Green Bay will have to figure out how to carve that out for him. The “Smith Bros” will still be starting as the edge rushers. However, there is an intriguing role that Gary could fill due to his size.
Kenny Clark is a massive presence on the defensive line. He is one of the best defensive tackles in the entire NFL. But, if the Packers want to get the most out of him, they need to provide him with some help up front.
Gary has the size and athleticism to play inside on the line. That is how Mike Pettine could get him on the field more. Having him on the field would help in the middle of the line and give the Packers even more of a pass rush.
If the Packers want their defense to take the next step, getting Gary more involved is a step in the right direction. They will also need Jaire Alexander to take the next step in the secondary.
Expect to see the Packers find a way to put Rashan Gary on the field much more often this season. He has been working hard and is motivated to take a big leap in his second NFL season.
This is going to be a fun year for Gary and will show that the Packers did not make a mistake in the 2019 NFL Draft.
