The Green Bay Packers have been rumored to be looking for some help at the wide receiver position over the last couple of years. Two years ago, it seemed that everyone wanted them to trade for Robby Anderson at the trade deadline. Last offseason, it was reported that the Packers tried to sign veteran wideout Emmanuel Sanders before he signed with the Saints.
Well, general manager Brian Gutekunst may have another chance to sign Sanders. The veteran wideout was released by the Saints this offseason.
Now, according to one NFL executive, the Packers are going to pursue Sanders once again to add another weapon behind Davante Adams for Aaron Rodgers.
“Emmanuel Sanders to Green Bay is something to watch for this offseason. They had great talks last offseason before he signed with New Orleans. There is no question the Packers still like him and I think that could be a very real fit.”
During the 2020 season with the Saints, Sanders had issues with consistency. However, he was still able to put up decent numbers. He finished the year with 61 receptions for 726 yards and five touchdowns.
Those numbers came even with the injury suffered by Drew Brees. Taysom Hill helped the team keep winning, but his passing numbers were not great. Sanders being able to put together a good all-around season is impressive.
Should the Packers and Sanders come together on a deal this offseason, he would be in a much better situation. Rodgers just won the NFL MVP award last season and he would be able to take advantage of opposing defenses trying to slow down Adams.
At 33 years old, the days of Emmanuel Sanders being a potential No. 1 wide receiver are gone. He is a supporting role player now, which is exactly what the Packers need. This would be a perfect situation for both sides.
Add in the fact that the two sides had productive talks last offseason makes this even more intriguing. Sanders and the Packers know where each other stand. They likely would still like to discuss terms again.
Expect to see the Packers try to be as aggressive as they can this offseason. They have already re-signed star running back Aaron Jones to a four-year, $48 million contract. Sanders could be their next target.
