What Makes Packers’ Za’Darius Smith Underrated
When thinking of the NFL’s most dominant pass-rushers, it’s not often someone names Green Bay Packers’ Za’Darius Smith. Typically, players who have previously racked up big numbers are named. However, that shouldn’t be the case when looking strictly at the lens of the 2019 season.
During a recent segment of NFL Total Access, the panelist each made their selection for the league’s most underrated player. Shaun O’Hara chose Smith and highlighted the versatility he provides as a pass-rusher for the Packers’ defense despite not earning a Pro Bowl spot.
It’s easy to see why O’Hara chose Smith considering his production from the 2019 season. He managed to set a new single-season career-high in sacks (13.5) and QB hits (37) in addition to tackles for loss (17). That type of production displays an elite edge rusher impact that went underappreciated.
The figure for QB hits Smith provided the Packers was tied for the most in the NFL while his count for total pressures (93) topped the whole league. It’s difficult to see why his name was left off basic means for recognizing individual excellence such as the Pro Bowl.
When crafting the 2019 NFL All-Analytics Team, NFL.com’s Cynthia Freelund highlighted the production Smith provided the Packers. He was only player on Green Bay’s roster to crack the list and he was one of just two edge rushers to earn a spot, too.
It’s difficult to envision Za’Darius Smith not commanding more attention if he manages to put together high-level season for the Green Bay Packers. Providing year-to-year consistency is crucial to land that respect since longevity is no easy feat to achieve.
