The Carolina Panthers are the last remaining winless team in the NFL, 0-5 heading into Week 6. They are going to be hard-pressed to change that as they are heading on the road to face off with the Miami Dolphins.
On top of the difficulty of their matchup, the Panthers are going to be extremely short-handed in the game. Carolina has already ruled out five players. Headlining that list is running back Miles Sanders.
Sanders will miss Week 6 because of a shoulder injury. In his absence, the team will turn to Chuba Hubbard and wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. to handle the backfield duties. Per head coach Frank Reich, Hubbard will be leaned on heavily.
“We’ll do it by committee, but Chuba will more than likely get the bulk of the carries,” Reich said on Friday.
Hubbard was already taking on a bigger role in the team’s backfield and will now have a chance to cement that standing. With Shenault as the only alternative in the backfield, this is Hubbard’s week to shine.
Joining Sanders on the sidelines on the offensive side of the ball is left guard Chandler Zavala and tight end Gio Ricci. The other absences are on the defensive side of the ball, and in the secondary.
Starting safeties Xavier Woods and Von Bell will both miss the contest against the Dolphins. Woods is dealing with a hamstring injury, while Bell battles a quad issue. With cornerback Jaycee Horn already on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury, the Panthers will be attempting to stop the highest-scoring offense in the NFL with backups in nearly every spot in the secondary.
That is certainly a less-than-ideal way to try and slow down Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. On a positive note, edge rusher Brian Burns was a full participant in practice on Friday despite being labeled as questionable with an ankle injury. Defensive tackle Derrick Brown is also questionable with knee and ankle injuries.
