The Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receivers have been the subject of severe criticism this season, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes is tired of hearing about it.

When asked about his wide outs during his press conference on Wednesday, Mahomes said they are doing all that they can.

“You just come into work and try to get better, that’s all you can do,” Mahomes said, via Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “I think the guys have done a great job of trying to do that. We’re going to continue to get better. I thought we had a lot of great things in the last game, obviously just didn’t execute in the red zone. It’s the little things in this league that are the difference between winning and losing, so we’ll continue to focus on those and try to get better going into this week.”

Tight end Travis Kelce has been, by far, Mahomes’ most reliable target this season, as he has caught 74 passes for 813 yards and five touchdowns. The only wide receiver Mahomes has seemed comfortable utilizing is Rashee Rice, who has logged 52 catches for 591 yards and five scores.

Otherwise, Mahomes has been unable to consistently connect with any of his pass-catchers.

“You can work on the stuff that didn’t work in the game, you try to adjust those things and maximize the stuff you did well,” added Mahomes. “At the same time, this league is close, these games come down to one score, and it’s whoever executes the small things that come out with the win.”

Mahomes has thrown for 3,127 yards, 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season. While those are hardly bad numbers, they are also a far cry from what we have become accustomed to seeing from the 28-year-old. Still, the two-time Super Bowl champion remains confident in his receivers.

“In the locker room I think everyone knows we’re all trying to go out there and be great and trying to win football games,” Patrick Mahomes said. “I have a lot of trust in those guys. I see how hard they are working.”

The Chiefs have gone just 2-3 over their last five games to fall to 8-4, due much in part to their inconsistent offense.

Kansas City will take on the Buffalo Bills this Sunday.
