Patrick Mahomes Showers Chiefs’ WR Justyn Ross With Praise

The Kansas City Chiefs made a lot of headlines for how they revamped their pass-catching group this offseason. After trading Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins, they signed and drafted several wide receivers to help fill the void left by their former No. 1 target.

JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling were both signed in free agency. With their second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, they selected Skyy Moore out of Western Michigan. Mecole Hardman and Josh Gordon are still on the roster to add even more depth.

Making the roster as an undrafted free agent is an uphill battle, but Justyn Ross is one to keep an eye on. The Clemson product was signed by the Chiefs following the draft and has a lot of confidence in himself and his skills.

Ross has garnered some attention for a catch that he made during OTAs last week.

That play even garnered some praise from his star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. Getting on the good side of the face of the franchise can only help a young player on his quest to make the final roster.

Mahomes was very complimentary of Ross and spoke highly of the undrafted free agent.

“Yeah, I mean, you still see the talent. I think that’s the first thing,” Mahomes said. “I know people saw the catch on Twitter, but it’s just the way he catches the football out of the air. He snatches it — there’s no drops or anything like that. Now it’s about him learning the NFL offense. That’s how it is for every rookie when they come in, is, you don’t see that top talent that they can be until they learn and they can just play fast. And I think you’ve seen that. You’ve seen those flashes of how talented he can be. And then you’ve seen times where he’s just barely off of what we wanted. And he learns from that, he doesn’t make that same mistake.

“And so, the more and more reps that he gets, I can only imagine how good he’s going to be because of the talent he possesses.”

Going undrafted isn’t something anyone thought would happen to Ross with how he began his collegiate career. He looked destined to become a first-round pick, but his production and health spiraled, as he dealt with a spinal condition.

Now cleared, he is looking to make a name for himself and make this Chiefs roster. With some opportunities available at the position, Ross has made a great first impression and has a chance to continue moving up the depth chart.
