Patrick Queen Could Be Traded By Ravens Before 2023 Season

The Baltimore Ravens handed out some eye-popping contracts this offseason. Linebacker Roquan Smith received a record-breaking contract for a player at his position. Quarterback Lamar Jackson signed the richest contract in league history. Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. signed a one-year deal worth $18 million despite missing the entire 2022 season rehabbing from a torn ACL.

Baltimore has committed major money to retain key players and upgrade positions of need. As long as they can avoid the injury bug that has bitten them hard the last few seasons, the Ravens are in a position to once again be contenders in the AFC.

However, the big money that they have committed to players this offseason will lead to some questions about the future. One of the players who are left in limbo is linebacker Patrick Queen.

While the Ravens have notoriously built their defenses through elite linebacker play, it is hard to imagine Queen landing a lucrative contract after Smith got paid. Also, declining the fifth-year option on his rookie contract could be an omen of things to come.

In addition to the Smith extension, the Ravens also used a third-round pick on linebacker Trenton Simpson out of Clemson. The writing is certainly on the wall about Queen’s future, despite the team saying he is part of their long-term plans.

“We want Patrick Queen on this team; we want to keep him on this team. We will, at some point, try to get him signed, hopefully, to an extension if we can,” general manager Eric DeCosta said, per Evan Mink of the team’s official website.

Alas, Queen has landed on the list of players that Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report believes each team should consider trading. Now entering the last season on his rookie contract, if an offer is presented to the Ravens they will think long and hard about making a deal.

With plans of contention, Baltimore isn’t going to give Queen away for free. But if they get a strong offer, more than what a compensatory pick would be, they will think long and hard about pulling the trigger. With his presumed long-term replacement already in the building, it would make some sense to trade the former first-round pick.

While Queen hasn’t quite lived up to expectations, plenty of teams should be willing to take a shot on him. He is still only 23 years old and has some unlocked potential that the right coach and scheme could bring out of him.
