Chase Winovich, Defensive End
The Patriots’ defense lost their two sack leaders over the offseason. Kyle Van Noy and Jamie Collins were both versatile last season, but they now need to be replaced. One player that could be in for a big season is Chase Winovich.
Winovich had a solid rookie season, however he is still a young player. If he struggles they could turn to rookie Anfernee Jennings, but the opportunity to showcase his abilities initially should at least be present.
Let’s not forget, Winovich was quite impressive while playing in Michigan. He is am athletic edge rusher with a high motor and a quick first step. A strong aspect of his skill-set is his ability use his hands. The Patriots’ defensive scheme is always among the leagues best. If Winovich can polish his game, he has a chance for a big year.
While Winovich is a promising prospect, there is a chance he regresses. The fact that New England had such a great rotation of pass rushers helped Winovich last season. However pushing a young defensive end to be the feature pass rusher doesn’t always pan out. If New England isn’t creative with their defensive scheme, Winovich will have to rely on purely skill and athleticism.
