The New England Patriots were hoping that Cam Newton would be able to resurrect his career this season, but that has not been the case. Due to the struggles that Newton has had, the Patriots could be looking for a new quarterback this offseason. If that is the case, Ryan Fitzpatrick could end up being a potential answer.
Fitzpatrick began the 2020 season as the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. However, they turned to Tua Tagovailoa to replace him midway through the season. He has still seen some playing time, but is likely to leave town this offseason.
Should he leave, the Patriots would make a lot of sense. He could end up being the full-time starter for New England if he signed.
Pro Football Focus took a look at Fitzpatrick’s upcoming free agency and they have projected that he will end up signing a one-year, $10 million contract with the Patriots.
So far this season in eight games with the Dolphins, Fitzpatrick has completed 68.5 percent of his pass attempts for 2,091 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He may not be a star, but he is a quality quarterback that can win football games with a good team around him.
New England will have other options to look at if they want to. A guy like Jameis Winston could be worth the risk. Even Jacoby Brissett returning to the Patriots might be of interest.
No matter what Bill Belichick and company choose to do, they need better production from the quarterback position. Fitzpatrick would be able to produce better numbers than Newton has this season. He also would not break the bank.
Other teams will have interest in signing Fitzpatrick as well. He can be a starter, but some may view him as a perfect backup who could come in and play well if their starter gets injured.
Expect to hear the Patriots connected to Ryan Fitzpatrick this offseason. They may not end up signing him, but he would make a lot of sense.
