The New England Patriots made a massive move on Sunday evening, signing veteran free agent quarterback Cam Newton to a one-year contract. After a full offseason of rumors surrounding Newton to New England, the deal finally came together. Now, it appears that Josh Gordon could be next on the radar.
According to CBS Sports, the Patriots are one of the top potential landing spots for the free agent wide receiver. Gordon played with the Patriots in 2018 and also played with them for half of the 2019 season.
Here is the reasoning that they gave for Gordon to the Patriots being a legitimate possibility.
He’s never been afraid to stockpile veteran hopefuls, and Gordon has familiarity in the system. If you can add competition to a WR room currently banking on an aging Julian Edelman, a recovering N’Keal Harry and guys like Mohamed Sanu and Marqise Lee, you do it.
Gordon to the Patriots makes a ton of sense, especially after the move to bring in Newton. They will be looking to add as much talent around Newton as possible. Bill Belichick is always looking for ways to improve his roster.
Newton could very well keep New England in contention in the AFC. He currently has Julian Edelman, N’Keal Harry, and Mohamed Sanu as his top wide receivers. Adding Gordon to that mix would give them a very strong core.
The Patriots are looking to remain in the Super Bowl hunt. Belichick obviously doesn’t want to tank this season. Gordon would be the kind of move they need to make.
Expect to hear more rumors in the near future about Josh Gordon. He might not end up with the Patriots, but the fit makes a ton of sense for both parties.
