The Philadelphia Eagles emerge as a plausible trade destination for an intriguing quarterback, according to a piece by CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin. Speculation surrounds New York Jets’ quarterback Zach Wilson, who has been granted permission to explore trade options, as confirmed by Jets’ general manager Joe Douglas on Wednesday, February 28.

Benjamin suggests Philadelphia as one of five potential landing spots for the 24-year-old quarterback. He points to the Eagles’ current need for a backup quarterback—especially with Marcus Mariota hitting free agency—as well as their prior interest in Wilson during his college days and his agility on the field as factors that could prompt Philadelphia to pursue him.

“They would surely prefer for Jalen Hurts’ backup to be more established, but perhaps in-house project Tanner McKee will rise to the No. 2 job this offseason. Regardless, the Eagles have always been proactive about accumulating QB assets, Wilson is mobile like Hurts, and the team was reportedly heavily interested in the maligned Jets QB coming out of college. New York general manager Joe Douglas is also an old friend, previously working alongside Howie Roseman in Philly.”

Despite facing criticism over the past few seasons, Wilson brings valuable experience to the table. Having played in the demanding New York sports market and starting in 33 games, Wilson has been seasoned in handling pressure-packed situations.

Despite a modest 12-21 record and a higher interception rate than touchdown throws (25 interceptions versus 23 touchdowns), Wilson has been the Jets’ starting quarterback for the past three seasons. Despite being benched and relegated to third-string quarterback status on occasions, Wilson has showcased glimpses of promise.

Notably, he was named AFC Player of the Week in Week 14 after an impressive performance against the Houston Texans, throwing for 301 yards and two touchdowns.

Transitioning to Philadelphia as a backup quarterback could provide the change of scenery Wilson needs to rejuvenate his career. Given his potential displayed in certain outings, he could serve as a reliable spot starter should Jalen Hurts face injury.

However, the possibility of a trade hinges on Wilson’s willingness to renegotiate his contract. Otherwise, the Jets might opt to release him, simplifying the acquisition process for the Eagles. This could involve signing Wilson to a veteran’s minimum deal without parting with any draft picks, as noted by Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

In sum, acquiring Zach Wilson could be an intriguing move for the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite criticisms, Wilson’s skill set could make him an asset as a backup to Hurts, potentially providing stability in the quarterback position.
