Following his team’s deflating Week 15 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts made some rather critical comments where he appeared to question his club’s commitment.
However, on Thursday, Hurts clarified his remarks, saying he was pointing the finger at himself.
“My mind was in a place of really just trying to challenge myself,” Hurts said, via Mike Florio of pro Football Talk. “When you think holistically about the things you want to accomplish and everything that we’re trying to do, that all runs through me. That all starts with me. And so when I say ‘we,’ I mean me, because I’m the point guard out there. I’m the one that makes everything go. And I’m the guy that everyone trust to set the pace for everything. That’s in how I play. That’s in my leadership. That’s in every aspect of the game, and it comes with the shoes that I walk in.”
Hurts is coming off of a miserable outing, as he went just 17-for-31 with 143 yards and a couple of interceptions against the Seahawks. He did carry the ball 13 times for 82 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but his efforts on the ground were marred by his poor passing.
“You challenge yourself and you challenge the people around you,” added Hurts. “But I think it’s just a situation where we are. It’s just something we’re going through, not something we’re stuck in.”
The “situation” that Hurts is describing is a three-game losing streak that has dropped the Eagles to 10-4 and out of first place in the NFC East.
On the season overall, the 25-year-old has thrown for 3,335 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 65.7 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 89.9. He has also rushed for 542 yards and 14 scores while averaging 3.9 yards per carry.
Jalen Hurts has certainly taken a bit of a step back this season after posting an MVP-caliber campaign last year, leading Philadelphia to a Super Bowl appearance in the process.
Philly will take on the New York Giants on Christmas Day as it aims to snap its recent skid. It will then battle the Arizona Cardinals before seeing the Giants again to wrap up the regular season.
