Philadelphia Eagles: 3 Burning Questions Following Week 2 Loss vs. Buccaneers

No. 2: How will the Eagles’ targets hold up?

With wide receivers Alson Jeffrey and Mike Wallace sidelined due to injury, the Eagles’ receiving corps has taken a significant hit. Considering Indianapolis is so weak at cornerback, we may not see the effects on Sunday, but it is still something in need of an answer. How will Wentz’s wideouts fare against premier corners? In a catastrophic case, the depth will not show up, creating a one-dimensional offense that simply will not produce.

However, there is one thing working in favor of Philadelphia — the Eagles’ depth and versatility at the running back position.

Darren Sproles and Corey Clement provide passing-game options from the backfield and the slot, something we will see a lot of this weekend. These built-in weapons will do a ton to assist Wentz and expose a Colts defense that is still developing its linebackers.

Additionally, a heavy reliance on the running backs in a passing offense should allow for more creativity from Pederson’s side of things. Watch out for an effort to catch Indianapolis off guard while keeping Carson Wentz safe. This roster is built to produce no matter who is hurt if their depth can perform.

Who is the next guy up?

In terms of an actual wide receiver stepping up, the logical conclusion would be Nelson Agholor.

Out of the slot, the former USC Trojan has continued his stretch of excellence from last year, exploiting slot corners and mismatches all game long. So far, he has been used repeatedly as a check-down option. But with two deep threats absent, Agholor may take on that role.

In the upcoming weeks, expect Agholor to see a massive jump in targets, receptions, yards, touchdowns… the whole nine yards. The development of Agholor has been a key for this offense’s success, now it is time to put it to the test.
