The Philadelphia Eagles are off to a 5-1 start in 2023. They were recently upset by the New York Jets, but the Eagles still project to be a Super Bowl contender. Being aggressive at the trade deadline may be a reasonable course of action for Philadelphia, however. Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports recently released a mock trade idea between the Eagles and Denver Broncos involving Justin Simmons.

The trade idea has Philadelphia improving their secondary by acquiring Simmons from the Broncos. In return, the Eagles would send Denver a 2024 second-round pick.

The Broncos would likely prefer to receive a first-round pick for a player as talented as Simmons. However, as Benjamin notes, Simmons is already 29-years old. Decline could be a factor at some point fairly soon, but since Simmons is still extremely talented a second-round pick is arguably fair value.

Simmons is a trade candidate. Denver is in the midst of an abysmal season, currently holding a 1-5 record. Trading Simmons would make sense amid the Broncos’ rebuild.

The 29-year-old has one interception and 24 combined tackles so far in 2023. Simmons is fresh off of a tremendous 2022 season that saw him finish with a league-leading six interceptions across just 12 games played.

The Eagles already feature a strong defense. Adding depth in the secondary certainly wouldn’t be a bad idea. Philadelphia has their sights set on a championship and adding a star like Simmons would only help their Super Bowl pursuit.

Simmons will draw plenty of interest from around the league though. Almost every contender makes sense as a fit for him. The Eagles need to be prepared to face stiff competition if they do indeed attempt to acquire Justin Simmons from the Broncos.

In the end, Philadelphia should at least reach out to Denver. The fit makes sense.
