Pittsburgh Steelers: 3 most impressive stats from 2019

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

1. 38 takeaways by the defense

Since the Troy Polamalu days in Pittsburgh, the Steelers have had trouble forcing turnovers on opposing teams. But when the Steelers acquired Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Miami Dolphins this season, all of that changed.

Just by himself, Fitzpatrick was able to contribute five interceptions and three fumble recoveries in 14 games with the Steelers. To emphasize how impressive that is, the Los Angeles Chargers combined for only 14 forced turnovers as a team.

Besides Fitzpatrick, it’s worth pointing out that Pittsburgh led the NFL with 38 takeaways. Comparatively, the Steelers accumulated only 37 takeaways in the 2017 and 2018 seasons combined.

Even with poor play under center in 2019, the Steelers’ defense almost carried the team into the postseason. If the defense can sustain their dominance in 2020, Pittsburgh could be right back in the playoffs next season.
