There has been a lot of discussion about what the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to do at the quarterback position this offseason. The first move was already made, as veteran backup Mitchell Trubisky has already been released.

With Mason Rudolph set to hit free agency, the Steelers are left with only Kenny Pickett on their roster currently. A 2022 first-round pick, many people are ready to already throw in the towel on Pickett as the team’s starting quarterback going forward.

Based on the production he has provided, it isn’t a surprise that some people want to see a change. Pickett has the lowest touchdown percentage in the NFL since entering the league and the Steelers’ offense has not come close to living up to expectations.

There are some positives to Pickett’s performance, as he rarely turns the ball over. But his inconsistency with accuracy and inability to put the offense in position to score points has led to some people souring on him.

Alas, a lot of that noise about needing to move on from Pickett is coming from outside of the organization. Head coach Mike Tomlin has remained committed to Pickett, saying multiple times he believes he can still be the team’s starter moving forward.

Another advocate for Pickett within the organization is General Manager Omar Khan. Khan still has confidence in Pickett getting the job done and believes some of the changes made regarding the offense will enable him to take that next step forward.

“I have full faith in Kenny. He’s shown us some good things, and there were some issues with the offense. I’m excited about the impact that Arthur Smith is going to have on him,” said Khan.

The Steelers hired Arthur Smith to be their new offensive coordinator after he was fired by the Atlanta Falcons as their head coach. He spent three seasons at the helm in Atlanta, with his undoing being the quarterback position.

Pittsburgh is hopeful that Smith can recapture the success he had previously as a head coach. With the Tennessee Titans as their offensive coordinator, Smith oversaw Ryan Tannehill playing the best football of his career.

With the Titans, and Falcons, Smith was able to build one of the most productive rushing attacks in the NFL. The Steelers are certainly hopeful he can do that for them, as a strong ground game would take a lot of pressure off of Pickett and the passing game.
