Predicting the 2020 NFL season for Cowboys WR Amari Cooper

The Dallas Cowboys showed their appreciation and belief in Amari Cooper when they re-signed the four-time Pro Bowler to a five year, $100 million contract extension heading into the 2020 season.

What does that say for Cooper in 2020? Can he improve his statistics from a year ago? Having over 1,100 yards is a lot in the NFL but this season, Cooper can find himself with a little less double coverage and more room to operate.

The Cowboys drafted one of the best wide receivers in college football when CeeDee Lamb fell into their laps with the 17th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The team did enough via Free Agency in order to pick the best player available at that spot. Drafting Lamb will without any doubt open up the playbook for guys like Cooper and Gallup who is also coming into his own.

Cooper is a fantastic route runner. One of the best to do it in the NFL. With the addition of Lamb primarily playing as a slot receiver, this will keep defenses guessing on where they want to bring the safety help over the top or in the middle of the field.

Dak Prescott will have his choice of Cooper, Gallup, Lamb, and an emerging tight end in Blake Jarwin to throw to. Don’t forget if defenses want to stack the box to stop the run, this will allow one on one coverage across the board, and Cooper will win those matches nine times out of ten.

Cooper has already gone on record saying the goal is to have three 1,000 yard receivers in 2020. New head coach Mike McCarthy likes how he thinks. These are not unrealistic expectations for 2020 considering the talent the Cowboys have on the offensive side of the ball.

Now, there is only one ball to go around. Amari Cooper’s numbers in yardage can indeed drop in 2020. I’m predicting just over 1,000 yards, his catches increase from 79 to about 95, and the biggest leap will be his touchdown grabs.

The field will be wide open for Cooper to do what he does best and that creates separation using his route running ability and speed. Cooper will find the end zone 15 times in 2020.
