What to Expect from Myles Garrett in 2020

The Browns displayed great confidence in Myles Garrett by providing him with a contract extension, and for good reason. Entering his fourth season, he has lofty goals for himself and the expectations should remain high.

There is no denying the strong impact Garrett makes as a pass rusher. He has managed to total 30.5 sacks and 65 QB hits in 37 regular-season appearances. Expect to see another double-figure sack season from him with a real chance of reaching 15.

There are a few areas where Garrett can improve in his impact and he will be the first to admit. During an interview with NFL Network’s Charles Woodson, Garrett noted he needs to ‘play the run’ and ‘get tackles for a loss, knock the ball out.’

“I want to prove that I’m the best defensive player in the league,” Garrett said. “The best pass rusher, that’s nice, but I need to play the run, be able to get tackles for a loss, knock the ball out…make it unanimous.”

The NFL’s top 100 players list always features highly debatable results but shows the general perception of the top players in the league. For Garrett, he ranked No. 49 on the list heading into 2019 but came in at the No. 80 spot in this year’s edition.

If the focus Garrett placed on improving in these areas, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him post career-high totals (single-season best) in combined tackles (44), tackles for loss, (12) and forced fumbles (three). In fact, that should be the expectation.

For the Browns to be more competitive in the AFC North, Myles Garrett will be relied upon to make a big impact. He should be counted on to accomplish precisely that as long as he can stay out of trouble.
