There has been a lot of focus recently on the quarterback position for the Las Vegas Raiders. That will drastically impact the team’s outlook for the 2023 season, but the front office hasn’t let that distract them from seeking out opportunities to upgrade the rest of the roster.
With a secondary still in flux, the Raiders could be getting some help soon. According to Vic Tafur and Tashan Reed of The Athletic, Las Vegas is likely going to sign star cornerback Marcus Peters.
“Peters came in for a visit last month and, according to league and team sources, the two sides have stayed in touch as Peters tests the market,” The Athletic reported. “The Raiders have other veteran cornerbacks on their list, but Peters could very likely sign with the team that he grew up rooting for as a kid in Oakland.”
Peters has been arguably the best defensive playmaker in the league since he was drafted by the Raiders’ AFC West rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs, in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The Washington product is a three-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro First Team member and one-time All-Pro Second Team member.
In his first six seasons in the NFL, Peters recorded at least three interceptions and led the league in interception return yards three times. Twice he led the league in defensive touchdowns, as he has six pick-sixes in his career.
However, a torn ACL during the 2020 season has derailed his career a little bit. He missed the entire 2021 campaign and during the 2022 season, he didn’t look like the same kind of player. Missing an entire season and rehabbing, it is fair to cut Peters some slack, but it was the first time in his career he failed to record at least three interceptions.
Another year removed from the injury and Peters should start looking more like his old self. The Raiders would be a great landing spot for him as there is a path to significant playing time. The current depth chart doesn’t have any set-in-stone starters, so Peters could even find himself in the starting lineup.
