3. Goff is a Good QB, You Guys Are Just Mean
The NFL fanbase is one obsessed with first impressions. This is bad for Jared Goff.Despite two Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl appearance, all while leading one of the most dynamic offenses in football over the last three years, Goff still struggles to shed the label of an average to below-average starting NFL quarterback– in part, because of one of the most disastrous rookie campaigns in recent history, along with some persistent turnover troubles.
But it’s important to remember just how much Goff has grown as a player since first arriving to the league, and just how good he’s been since that time. Because it wasn’t long ago that we were uttering the words “Jared Goff” and “MVP” in the same sentence, and he’s got the numbers to back it up.
Take away that rookie season, one that was captained by one of the worst offensive coaching performances since the invention of the forward pass, and look at what kind of player Jared Goff has been. A player that’s averaged 4,300 passing yards and 27 touchdowns a season over the last three years– two numbers that would have ranked in the top ten among quarterbacks this season, all while completing over 63% of his passes.
Even during a “down 2019 season” by Goff’s standards, the Rams’ quarterback still managed to throw for over 4,600 yards and 22 touchdowns. All while the offensive line and the running game struggled around him.
Goff’s first two seasons under McVay show that he has the potential to bounce back from a downtick in 2019, and match the impressive volume he put up last year with the solid efficiency he had in the previous two seasons.
