Rams Make Move To Add Former Saints’ Defensive Back

The Los Angeles Rams faced a harsh reality this offseason. Capped out and without many avenues to upgrade the roster, they opted to take the reset route. This roster is going to look a lot different in 2023 than it did in 2022.

A lot of key contributors were moved on from this offseason as the team tries to get their salary cap situation in check. After years of going all-in on veterans and giving away draft picks in trades like Oprah gives away gifts at the holidays, things have finally caught up to the Rams.

Jalen Ramsey, Bobby Wagner, Leonard Floyd, Nick Scott, Taylor Rapp, Greg Gaines, A’Shawn Robinson and David Long Jr. all moved on from the defense this offseason. That leaves a lot of opportunities for guys to take advantage of.

Los Angeles had the most draft picks of the Sean McVay era this year, looking to address their depth concerns across the roster. They have continued reworking the bottom of their roster as they move into the next phase of their offseason program.

This week, they claimed defensive back Vincent Gray off waivers from the New Orleans Saints. Gray went undrafted in 2022 and was signed by New Orleans, where he spent the entire season on the practice squad.

This offseason Gray was signed to a futures deal once the regular season ended. He didn’t make it too long into Year 2, getting cut on Monday. But, the Rams make for an excellent landing spot for any young player looking to make his imprint in the league.

There is a lot of playing time up for grabs, as there is a path to Gray getting on the practice squad or roster. He has a good pedigree, playing collegiately at Michigan for three seasons before declaring for the draft.

He appeared in 28 games with the Wolverines, recording 91 total tackles with five tackles for loss and one sack. Gray also had 15 passes defended and one forced fumble in three seasons under Jim Harbaugh.
