Rams Projected To Sign David Montgomery In NFL Free Agency

The Los Angeles Rams are going to have their work cut out for them this off-season. There are a lot of holes on their roster to fill and they don’t have very many assets to fill the voids with. Lacking draft capital and already over the salary cap, the front office is going to have to get creative when upgrading the roster.

The Rams have taken a unique approach to build their roster in recent seasons, trading away draft picks like Oprah gives away presents around the holidays. That has left them in a tough spot, but as long as the core members such as head coach Sean McVay, quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, defensive tackle Aaron Donald and cornerback Jalen Ramsey are on the roster, that is the approach they are likely to keep.

Some better injury luck in 2023 would certainly go a long way in the Rams turning things around. They suffered an exorbitant number of injuries last season, especially along the offensive line. That led to the offensive production tanking as injuries ravaged that side of the ball.

If the Rams have any hopes of turning things around, the offensive line needs to remain healthy. But, they could also use an upgrade in talent at some spots. Finding more consistent production at the running back position is a must.

Last season, Los Angeles ranked 27th in rushing yards and 27th in yards per attempt as they didn’t get anything going on the ground. Cam Akers has lacked the explosiveness he showed as a rookie since coming back from his Achilles injury. Darrell Henderson was eventually released and rookie Kyren Williams wasn’t overly impactful.

Looking for an upgrade, the Rams could find a bargain in free agency in the form of David Montgomery. He is predicted to sign a one-year, $5 million deal with the Rams in free agency.

Montgomery isn’t the most explosive running back available this offseason as he has averaged only 3.9 yards per carry in four seasons with the Chicago Bears. If the blocking ahead of him is good, Montgomery has shown he can shoulder a lead-back role and produce.

However, where he would help the Rams the most is in the passing game. Montgomery is excellent in pass protection and one of the highest-rated running backs in the passing game since entering the NFL.

Last season, the five running backs that appeared in games for the Rams caught only 49 passes combined; Montgomery had 34 on his own. That pass-catching element out of the backfield is something the Rams are sorely lacking, making Montgomery an ideal free-agent target.
