Rams Receive Brutal Update on Kyren Williams, Ronnie Rivers

The Los Angeles Rams have played better football in the 2023 season than many people would have predicted. Through Week 6, they are sitting at 3-3, winning two of their last three games and building some positive momentum.

The Rams aren’t going to be contending for a Super Bowl, but they are more competitive than people thought. With a borderline top-10 offense and a defense that has gelled better than expected, Los Angeles will give you a tough game week in and week out.

However, their game plan on the offensive side of the ball will have to be adjusted for the next few weeks. That is because their running back depth chart was hit hard by injuries in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Breakout star Kyren Williams suffered an ankle injury that forced him out of the game against the Cardinals as he underwent an MRI. His backup, Ronnie Rivers, also had to undergo an MRI as he suffered what was believed to be a PCL injury.

The Rams got the results back for both players and while it was semi-positive for Williams, Rivers’ diagnosis was more severe. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Williams, who gained 158 yards against Arizona, is dealing with an ankle sprain that will put his availability for Week 7 vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers in danger.

Rivers, however, wasn’t as fortunate. Rapoport shared that a trip to the injured reserve is likely for him as the PCL injury is expected to keep him sidelined for 4-to-5 weeks.

That is brutal news for the Rams, who are going to be without their top two running backs for at least one week, potentially longer. The only other running back on their 53-man roster is rookie Zach Evans, as the Rams will have to dip into free agency for at least one addition.

Royce Freeman, who is part of their practice squad, has appeared in three games thus far this season, all on special teams. He could be elevated and factor into the mix in the backfield as long as Williams is sidelined with his ankle injury.
