No. 7 — Week 1, 2013 vs. Washington Redskins
Date: September 9th, 2013
Score: Eagles, 33; Redskins, 27
Even if only for one week, it appeared as though Chip Kelly’s “blur offense” was about to change the vision of NFL offenses in the future. With Michael Vick under center, the Eagles scored at a frenetic pace. After one half, they were on pace for 106 plays and 886 yards in a single game.
Vick played a key role in orchestrating it, with three touchdowns in the first half alone. His final stats — 15-of-25, 203 yards, two touchdown passes, and then nine carries, 54 yards, and another scamper for a score — were modest, but they were a byproduct of how dominant the Eagles were. They were allowed the luxury of letting LeSean McCoy carry the load in the second half.
It’s one of those “you had to have been there” nights; to see that offense gelling in a way that shouldn’t have been possible in a real-life setting. Vick was in sync. In some ways, was even more dominant in the following week, with a career-high 428 passing yards and three scores.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t sustainable. But for the time being, Vick was playing some of the best football of his entire career. And this serves as the perfect way to begin the seven-game list.
