Ranking the top five running back rooms entering the 2020 NFL season

3. San Francisco 49ers

Notable running backs: Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman, Jerick McKinnon, Jeff Wilson

When watching the San Francisco 49ers, it’s apparent that Kyle Shanahan’s offense is centered around the run game. The offensive-minded coach does a spectacular job scheming up effective run plays and he prefers to utilize a slew of running backs rather than have a workhorse back.

After a stellar showing in the postseason in 2019, Raheem Mostert figures to technically be the starter next season, even though he’ll be part of a rotation of running backs. Besides Mostert, San Francisco also has Tevin Coleman, Jeff Wilson, and hopefully, Jerick McKinnon can make his regular-season debut after signing with the team two years ago.

While advancing to the Super Bowl last season, the 49ers had the No. 2 ranked rushing offense in the NFL. Ahead of the 2020 NFL season, San Francisco will need to determine the order of the team’s depth chart at the running back position. That’s a fantastic problem to have if you’re Shanahan.
