REPORT: Packers to sign free agent WR Devin Funchess

The Green Bay Packers have been looking for wide receiver help this offseason in free agency, but hadn’t found any. Now, they have made an addition to attempt to bring in more weapons for Aaron Rodgers.

According to a report from Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Packers will sign free agent wide receiver Devin Funchess.

Funchess signed with the Indianapolis Colts last offseason, but missed the majority of the 2019 season due to a broken collarbone. He only played in one game with the Colts, catching three passes on five targets for 32 yards.

Green Bay is bringing in a big body with this move for Rodgers. Funchess stands in at 6-foot-4 and just under 240 pounds. Rodgers will be able to utilize that size across from Davante Adams.

Brian Gutekunst didn’t have a ton of money to spend this offseason. The Packers did pursue Emmanuel Sanders in free agency, but he chose to sign with the New Orleans Saints. Green Bay can only hope that Funchess can get back to being a solid wideout like he was during his days with the Carolina Panthers.

One thing that this move doesn’t bring the Packers is much-needed speed. They could very well look to the 2020 NFL Draft for that.

Expect to see Funchess compete for a starting job in Green Bay. The Packers are getting a great talent who simply needs to put it all together. Perhaps he can do that with Rodgers throwing him the ball.
