RUMOR: Patriots view Jarrett Stidham as long-term option at quarterback

While fans and pundits continued to speculate what the New England Patriots would do at quarterback now that Tom Brady is gone, Bill Belichick and the rest of the organization seemed content sticking with second year Auburn product, Jarrett Stidham.

Matt Miller of Bleacher Report offered some insight in a recently published story on Stidham and the Patriots. He writes:

“Every move the Patriots have made has pointed to turning the keys of the franchise over to No. 4. They franchise-tagged top guard Joe Thuney. They drafted two tight ends to make middle-of-the-field passing easier. They kept a veteran secondary together while letting expensive linebackers walk to get the salary cap healthy for free-agency runs in 2021 and 2022.”

Miller also touches on New England’s refusal to target any quarterback in this year’s draft or go after any of the marquee names on the open market. He finishes by stating, “Why did the Patriots pass on every quarterback outside of the top three? Why didn’t they package their stockpile of draft capital to move up for a quarterback? Simple—it’s because they already have their guy. This is Jarrett Stidham’s team now.”

It’s certainly not out of the ordinary for the Patriots to stick with the players they already have in house, even if said player is replacing the most accomplished quarterback of all time.

Stidham is no slouch, though. He was considered by many scouts as a first round pick after his 2017 campaign. Stidham finished that season with 22 total touchdowns, 3,158 passing yards while completing 66.5 percent of his passes. His major highlight of that season came against Nick Saban’s Alabama squad, where he completed 21 of 28 passes while racking up 51 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Not to mention, Stidham completely outplayed second round quarterback Jalen Hurts in that contest, as Hurts completed a lousy 54.5 percent of his passes and only accumulated 112 passing yards.

Like Miller wrote, all signs have pointed towards Stidham starting for the Patriots in 2020. He’ll have enormous shoes to fill, but with Belichick still roaming the sidelines, the Pats should still be right in the thick of things this season.
