Saints Are ‘Team To Watch’ For Free Agent QB Baker Mayfield

The New Orleans Saints are one of the franchises that are hopping back on the quarterback carousel during the 2023 off-season. They ended the Jameis Winston experiment last season when he was injured and unable to reclaim the starting job from Andy Dalton. With Dalton now heading into free agency, the team is on the search for a new starting option.

One player who has been heavily linked to the Saints is Derek Carr. New Orleans was the only team reported to have gained permission to talk to Carr about joining the team as the Las Vegas Raiders are moving on from him.

Armed with a full no-trade clause, Carr can block any trade that the Raiders attempt to make involving him. It sounds like he is using that ability as he won’t be traded and will wait for the Raiders to release him, making him a free agent.

The Saints could still pursue Carr as a free agent, but the competition for him will be fierce. The Tampa Bay BuccaneersNew York JetsWashington Commanders and Indianapolis Colts could all be suitors for him.

Should New Orleans miss out on Carr, another quarterback to keep an eye on is Baker Mayfield. According to Albert Breer via JPA Football on Twitter, the Saints are a team to watch when it comes to Mayfield this offseason.

Mayfield began the 2022 season with the Carolina Panthers. They were hoping that he could regain the form he showed during the 2020 season when he led the Cleveland Browns to the postseason with a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers before losing a hard-fought game to the Kansas City Chiefs.

He didn’t come close to that level as Mayfield struggled. He was benched twice and eventually released by the team, ending up with the Los Angeles Rams. Mayfield made the most of that opportunity despite working with an undermanned group as Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson were both sidelined with injuries.

The No. 1 overall pick did play at a higher level with the Rams to finish out the season, which could put him in line to at least compete for a starting job during the 2023 off-season. There are only so many openings for a starting quarterback in the NFL, but the Saints would be one franchise potentially willing to offer him that chance for the upcoming season.
