San Francisco 49ers: 3 Players Primed for Breakout Seasons in 2018

Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

Ahkello Witherspoon, Cornerback

San Francisco will need their 23-year-old cornerback, Ahkello Witherspoon, to step up in 2018. If their defense is going to play up to its potential, they need a playmaker that can slow down opposing teams’ top targets.

Last season, Witherspoon showed a lot of improvement. He racked up 32 tackles to go along with a forced fumble, two interceptions, and seven defended passes. Witherspoon is a physical cornerback with major playmaking potential and he has yet to come close to his full talent.

Those numbers that Witherspoon put up last year were in just 12 games. That alone should tell fans just how talented Witherspoon is capable of being.

While his 2017 season was impressive, to say the least, Witherspoon is going to have an even bigger year. San Francisco will see him “break out” with a massive year and it would be reasonable to expect at least five interceptions and 13 defended passes. That production will take their defense to a new level.
