What will a large number of 49ers injuries mean for the rest of training camp?
Six players came away with injuries after the Cowboys win. All six of them are expected to make the 53-man roster.
- Solomon Thomas and Garry Gilliam both suffered concussions.
- George Kittle and Matt Breida each separated their shoulder and will be out the rest of the preseason.
- Malcolm Smith went down on the first possession because of his hamstring.
- And Eli Harold went out because of a knee issue that the team says isn’t serious.
Solomon Thomas is arguably the one that needs a strong preseason showing the most after his mediocre rookie season. After his injury, Julian Taylor came in and excelled in his place as he came away with a sack, a tackle for a loss and two quarterback hits.
Malcolm Smith is in a close second to Thomas. He can’t afford to miss any more time after being out all of last year with a torn pectoral. His injury is the one that’s going to take the longest as he’s doubtful for week two of the preseason.
Eli Harold is going to need to show some breakthrough at the Sam linebacker spot with Fred Warner looking to take his place. George Kittle needs to stay healthy if he’s going to have the big season everyone expects him to have. Matt Breida’s injury is the most interesting one, as the backs behind him got some real production.
Many players are going to need to step up to make up for these losses. And with the talent shown in the second half, this can happen. There’s not too much cause for concern.
