San Francisco 49ers: 5 Bold Predictions for the 2018 NFL Season

Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

Jimmy Garoppolo Will Break the Franchise’s Single-Season Passing Yards Record

It might be a daunting task when you consider the 49ers quarterbacks that have come before the Eastern Illinois product. However, the record is 4,278 passing yards and is held by none other than Pro Bowler, Jeff Garcia.

Amazingly, this record has remained unbroken since the start of the millennium. Even wilder is the fact that only two quarterbacks in 49ers franchise history have broken the 4,000-yard barrier: Garcia and Steve Young.

With the way that the NFL has been revolutionized to be more pass-happy than ever before, it’s shocking to know that no other 49ers field general has gone over this threshold. Especially when considering that 34 quarterbacks have gone over that mark since 2001.

Garoppolo has a chance to be the first in nearly two decades to achieve this as he showed in his small sample size last season. He averaged 308.4 yards per game in his five starts last season. When you put that number into a 16-game season, expose it comes to roughly 4,934 yards.

Not saying that the new starting quarterback will average this all throughout 2018. However, he’s already shown what he can do against elite defenses like Jacksonville’s last year. Also, Shanahan put together an offense that exposes defensive weaknesses and creates mismatches in the passing game. Plus, Garoppolo will have Garçon and Kittle healthy.

The Jimmy GQ era is beginning in San Francisco, and it should start with a strong 2018 campaign.
