Jimmy Garoppolo
A second-round pick. That was the price John Lynch agreed to for the heir to the New England throne. After giving him a chance to play, Jimmy Garoppolo shined, totaling 1,560 yards and seven touchdowns in five starts. Quickly, they realized what they had and signed him to one of the biggest deals in NFL history. Now, it looks like a franchise quarterback will play in the shadow of the Golden Gates for the first time in years. Quality quarterback play is here to stay in San Francisco.
Garoppolo is a strong-armed, accurate passer who has the natural ability to make plays. He is athletic enough to scare a defense and knows how to use it. Outside of pocket, there aren’t many better at dropping dimes. It is not all sunshine and rainbows for Garoppolo though. He still has trouble keeping track of safeties and deceiving defenders with his eyes. Breaking down zones is still a pressing issue, but the scheme he’s in lifts his floor. There is a lot to like out of the new quarterback in San Francisco, and it will be put on display in the near future.
Why This Helps Them Contend
The first thing in winning a division, a super bowl, in creating a dynasty, is a franchise quarterback. If all pans out, Jimmy Garoppolo will be that guy for them. 49ers fans will fall in love with their signal caller under center if they haven’t already. Everywhere this kid’s gone, he’s stepped up to the plate and exceeded expectations. There’s no reason why he can’t do the same in San Francisco. A future MVP candidate does a lot for a team, and it makes it so they can never be counted out. In today’s NFL, nothing means more than who’s under center, and the 49ers are sound there for the next decade.
